Society existence and formation is regulated by law which organizes the relationship between its members which ensures the order in society and eliminate conflicts of interest. Hence, it impossible for any society to exist without law, and if such a society is found it will collapse and demise. Moreover, no society is envisaged without legal knowledge that enables the qualifier in this knowledge to determine the aspects and attribution of rights to its owners.
As a result of the urgent need and importance of legal studies at the Iraqi universities, Department of Law was created in 2000. It was part of the structure of the Faculty of Education. In 2002 the department of law became a faculty known as the Faculty of Law and had graduated its first batch in 2003–2004 school year.
Since law faculties have long embraced political science studies at other universities, the Department of Political Science was established in 2009. The faculty became comprised of the departments of law and political science and changed its name to the Faculty of Law and Political Science in 2010. Eight batches of college students have graduated since its foundation.
