Postgraduate/Master’s Studies

In order to prepare a specialized scientific staff in human rights and public freedoms, the Faculty of Law and Political Science began to take the lead in opening postgraduate/master’s studies in human rights and public freedoms. The study, which demonstrated the aims of launching the postgraduate program, was based on postgraduate instructions No. 26 of 1990, relying on the scientific staff of the faculty.

The approval of the Ministry of Higher Education was obtained under the Ministry ‘ T5/4748 on 11/6/2015 instructions, and under university order No. TE/9534 on 23/6/2015.

The College started the first postgraduate classes at the academic year 2015-2016.

Vision, mission and objectives of postgraduate studies:

Vision

Leadership and excellence in the preparation of scientific staff which that play a role in deepening the culture of human rights and public freedoms especially in particular, this scientific field has become a hallmark of the progress and development of nations in creating a society that is aware of its rights and duties that builds a society of rights and freedoms.

Mission

Upgrading the postgraduate program on human rights and public freedoms in line with scientific trends and developments and developing scientific program that contribute in raising awareness of the rights guaranteed by the divine laws in general and the Islamic law in particular, as well as international conventions and covenants.

Objectives

-Increase students specialized scientific knowledge to promote their scientific capacity which enables them to write theses that address human rights issues in Iraq and build a democratic society.

– Graduate qualified staff to teach human rights in Iraqi academic institutions, as well as providing the community with faculty that deepens the scientific culture with this field of specialization.

– Scientific cooperation between the faculties, institutions and civil society, particularly with regard to rights and freedoms.

-The ability to think rationally about human rights issues and public freedoms and utilize them to develop the new Iraq.

– Cooperation with State institutions and civil society by involving students in activities and events that are compatible with scientific specialization and in order to gain students’ community service channels.

– Giving assistance related to the field of human rights to students in other disciplines to promote the comprehensive scientific vision of their theses and research.

– providing the Iraqi Library with postgraduates theses that promote understanding and scientific knowledge of human rights.

Postgraduate/Master’s program courses in human rights and public freedoms

Master’s studies follow the courses system, which is divided into two semesters, 15 weeks for each semester. The student studies the subjects shown below (preparatory year) followed by the preparation of the thesis in the field of specialization and as applied in postgraduate studies in Iraqi universities:

-Subjects of study required for the entrance examination to study master’s degree in human rights and public freedoms for the academic year 2019-2020:

1. General international law/Dr. Essam El Attiyah.

2. International humanitarian law/Dr. Said Salem.

3. International organizations/Dr. Hadi Naim al-Maliki.

4. Political and constitutional systems/Dr. Hassan Alani.

5. Criminal justice.
